Some State Liquor Stores to Open on Sunday
Yakima, WA - Starting this fall Liquor and Wine on Nob Hill in Yakima is one of 29 liquor stores state wide that's going to start opening it's doors for business on Sunday. That's meeting mixed reactions in the community.
Most of the people who live on 5th Street by the liquor store were unhappy about this decision. They worry about the possibility of drunk drivers being a problem on Sunday...a day when their kids play outside. One resident said when she signed off for the liquor store to be on her street, the agreement was it would be closed on Sunday. Last year Sunday profits from liquor stores brought in about 15 million dollars, and that makes some people see this decision as a positive one.
Dr. Roger Taylor lives in Yakima, and he says, "I think it'll actually help probably help the revenue of the state because the money and the resources that come from selling liquor is contributed to the general public interest and I think it's a good idea to go ahead and open them up on Sunday."
Another decision lawmakers in Olympia made was to drop the 42 cent per liter surcharge on bottles of liquor. That starts in July.
