YAKIMA, Wash -- Each year more than 5,000 Washington residents have their identities stolen. Today, across the state, thousands reduced their chances of becoming a victim.
On line fraud is the most common cause of identity theft, but a close second comes from thieves rooting around trash cans, mailboxes and recycling bins, and finding papers with personal information.
In Yakima, and all across the state, people dropped off bags and boxes full of personal and sensitive information in a statewide Shred-A-Thon.
The event was organized by law enforcement and consumer groups.
