Jury Awards More than $1 Million in K-9 Attack Trial

RICHLAND, Wash.- A federal jury has awarded Ken Rogers and his wife $1.052 million dollars in damages for a 2003 Kennewick Police K-9 attack.

The jury found that the officers violated his rights to unlawful search of his body, and also that the Sergeant and dog handler on the scene didn't correctly operate.

Under the civil rights act, Rogers will also recieve around $500,000 in attorney's fees.

The City of Kennewick is expected to front the entirety of the costs, even those for the county's part of the lawsuit.  The officers will not be forced to pay anything out of pocket.

Originally, the City offered to settle for about $420,000, and turned down a counter-offer of $780,000 from Rogers.

The defense has not decided whether they'll appeal.
