15-year-old Sunnyside Boy Could be Charged as Adult for Murder
YAKIMA, Wa - A 15-year-old Sunnyside boy who allegedly shot and killed a man in outlook is facing a second degree murder charge.
Bernardo Trevino appeared in juvenile court this afternoon.
The Yakima County Sheriff's Office says Trevino shot and killed 20-year-old George Salinas III on Tuesday night in Outlook in what they are calling a gang related murder.
The state issued a mandatory decline motion. Now probation department will do an investigation to see if Trevino meets the criteria to be tried as an adult or as a juvenile.
The juvenile prosecutor tells us that Trevino would likely face significantly less time in prison if he is tried as a juvenile. She says the standard sentencing range is about three and a half years up to age 21.
15-year-old Lorena Leon was in court as well facing a charge of accomplice to second degree murder. She could also be charged as an adult.
The juvenile prosecutor says she doesn't know how soon a decision will be made on either case.
Both Leon and Trevino have another hearing on May 18th.
