KENNEWICK, Wash. - Right now Benton County firefighters are preparing for the threat of summer wildfires. But there's a few things they said you can do too.
Crews said wildfires don't typically flare up until mid June. But that can change in a matter of days.
Firefighters have already checked out their wildfire gear. And now they're going through training to get refreshed, and ready to respond.
"We never know when our tones are going to go out for a call. We never know when a fire is going to happen. We never know when someone's going to have a heart attack," said Devin Helland, Public Information Officer, Benton Co. Fire District #1.
Fire fighters said you can help by maintaining vegetation on your property. Don't let cheat grass grow too high. Keep your fence lines trimmed. And make sure you have a space between your home and vegetation in your yard.
