Man jumps into river to escape police

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash -- Soaking wet, and wearing only his underwear Juan Mendoza was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Only a few minutes earlier, Police tried to stop Mendoza for speeding on I-82. They say he was driving well over 90 miles an hour. But instead of stopping, he continued driving, until he bailed out of Lexus Sedan at the Park-n-Ride at 16th Ave and Highway  12. From there, he jumped into the Naches River.

He floated down the river about three quarters of a mile to the twin bridges, where finally gave himself up to officers from four different police departments.

No one knows why Mendoza fled. He owns the white Lexus he was driving, and he didn't have any drugs or weapons on him. However, police say Mendoza has a previous conviction for eluding police, which could explain why he fled.
