YAKIMA, Wash -- Brooms and plastic bags were out in downtown Yakima, as volunteers swept the city clean.
The annual event is organized by the Yakima Chamber of Commerce. About 60 volunteers picked up litter from alleys and streets, planted flowers, and even painted several buildings along Yakima Avenue.
The event started back in 1980 when Mount Saint Helens erupted -- members of the city were asked to come out and help clean up the ash.
Organizers say there was a lot less trash this year than years past.
