RICHLAND, Wash. - Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day And Police department's around the area are wearing black mourning bands on their badges to remember the officers who have died in the line of duty.
As another tribute to fallen officers, all government agency flags are being flown at half mast.
Walla Walla County Deputy Mike Estes is the most recent police officer who died from injuries in a car accident. Estes was responding to a 911 call before the crash.
"It's not how these officers died that made them heroes, it's how they lived," said Sgt. Mike Cobbs with the Richland Police Department.
There will be a ceremony hosted by the fraternal order of police and local law enforcement at Columbia Park on Saturday.
The police honor guard and speakers begin around 11:30 a.m. Displays of fallen officers will begin at 9 a.m. and go until two p.m.
