SUNNYSIDE, Wash -- A proposed law in Sunnyside will make being a member of a gang illegal.
A gang in this case is three or more people, with an identifiable leader, coming together for a criminal purpose.
And even though the most in Sunnyside know something needs to be done about gangs, no one is sure that this new law will make a difference.
"I am so against incarcerating more and more youth," said Madeline Alviso. "Our prison systems are getting larger. This not the way to solve this problem."
But Sunnyside City Manager, Robert Stockwell says, random people will not be targeted.
"What we're talking about is criminals. People who have gathered together for a specific purpose for violating the law in a multitude of ways."
The town council will vote on the new ordinance next Monday. and if its approved it could take affect just a few days later.
