Washington State Program Offers Free Produce for Seniors

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wa.,--The program is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) and the Department of Social and Health Services. If you meet certain criteria, you could receive $40.00 worth of free produce.

As farmers markets, like this one in Yakima, prepare for a strong season ahead, senior citizens could be the first to sample Washington fruits and vegetables. Mid-columbia Meals on Wheels officials say this is a great experience.

"They get to go to the farmers market, they get to pick out some fresh fruits and veggies, can even be a little bit of a social experience for 'em," said Marcee Woffinden.

Here are the eligibility requirements.

  • Minimum 60-Years of Age
  • Monthly Income Less Than $1,575 (Single), $2,111 (Couple)

At this time, there is a wait list. Call Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels in Kennewick for information on how to get your name added to the list. Their phone number is (509) 735-1911.
