Encouraging Kids to Know of Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.- Those with no military connections turned out to pay their respects Monday.

Jerry Marville doesn't have any direct connection to the military, even so, he wants to make sure his kids know how important it is to remember those who've served.

He brought his sons and some of their friends to the cemetary to show them the graves of all the veterans.

Each grave with a flag by it is a veteran.

He says he wants them to know who stood up to give them the freedoms they all have today.

"My hope is that first of all they would understand the significance of memorial day, but also that they would grow in their awareness of the freedom that we have and that it's not free.  Someone fought for that freedom, to defend that freedom and very many people gave their lives," he said.

More than 1,000 people like Marville showed their respects at Desert Lawn.

Many of them had no connection to the military.
