Kennewick -- Dozens of butterflies took flight Tuesday, and about two dozen kids found themselves calling out their goodbyes at the same time. The insects have been part of a classroom project for second graders at Sunset View Elementary School in Kennewick.
The class has been babying the winged creatures for about two weeks, watching mother nature's magic as the eggs became caterpillars, and the chrysalis yielded to the beauty of the butterfly.
Tuesday, just outside Patty Kopp's classroom, the children gathered to see the insects released. Many of the children had named their special butterfly, and called out to the pretty bugs as they began to fly free. Some butterflies lingered on the pavement near the grass for some time, before finally taking flight.
And the kids carefully watched their step as they went back inside for a lesson in math.
