YAKIMA, Wash -- Like New Orleans, Yakima, Selah and Union Gap are protected from local rivers by levees. But as they age, they become less reliable.
In 1996 two levees almost broke, potentially flooding downtown.
Yakima County is working on a comprehensive flood management plan to prevent a Katrina like situation.
"If flood waters from the Naches River enter the town because they are protected by the levees," said Joel Freudenthal,"there is no way to get out."
The plan has 70 recommendation. The County Commissioners will vote on the plan June 12th.
