Walla Walla, Wa.,--Washington State Troopers say five are dead after a driver falls asleep at the wheel on State Route 124.
It happened just before 9:00am Saturdaymorning on SR 124 at Milepost 2. According to officials, everyone that died is a resident of Lapwai, Idaho.
Troopers say they were heading to a memorial service for another family member before the crash.
State Patrol says the driver of the Toyota Camry was heading westbound when she apparently fell asleep at the wheel. She than crossed the center line and collided with the truck head on traveling eastbound.
"It appears that the driver of the Toyota Camry fell asleep," said Sgt. Roger Wilbur. There were witnesses directly behind the Camry that indicate that."
According to the Coroner on-scene, three women and two boys (3-year-old and 11-year-old) suffered massive internal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
State Patrol says everyone was wearing their seatbelt although a child restraint seat found in the Camry wasn't size appropriate for the 3-year-old boy.
22-year-old Sean Farrell of Kennewick was driving the truck. He walked away with no injuries.
