Kids and Pocket Change Help Keep the Toppenish Pool Open

Posted: Updated:

TOPPENISH, Wash -  The Toppenish Pool is no longer funded by the city.  For it to remain open, money must come from the community.

Students at Kirkwood Elementary celebrated the end of their fundraiser Wednesday.  One of the most popular events during their play day was their principal sitting in a dunk tank.

"This is a community service of the students, they're young and they need to learn how to give back to the community and it's really important they did that," says Anastasia Sanchez, principal of Kirkwood.

Students were treated to snow cones, tug of war and other fun activites for their efforts in the fundraiser.   However, the kids have a bigger reward in mind.

"Now a bunch of kids get to go swimming this summer," explained Sophia Hunt, a 5th grader.

The Toppenish Pool will stay open as long as the community keeps funding it. So far pool officials say they've received enough money to stay open the whole summer.

For a month the students brought coins in to raise money.  In that time they raised over $2,000.

"If we didn't have the pool a lot of us would probably be staying inside and not playing at all," says Hunt.

For more information on the pool's hours and fees you can give them a call at 965-2220.
