OTHELLO, Wash. -- Avista is ordering daily inspections of its boom trucks after an accident at Hiawatha elementary school last week.
Before the accident, the equipment was inspected just once a year. Last week, students and teachers at Hiawatha Elementary School were having an egg drop when a boom separated from its truck, killing an Avista employee and injuring Hiawatha 5th grade teacher, Melissa Martinez.
Avista employees say they just want to make sure a similar event doesn't happen again. Avista officials say the daily equipment inspections will continue until they find out the cause of last week's booom failure. The Washington State Department of Labor is conducting its own investigation on the accident.
