Four Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Staff Received Radioactive Contamination

RICHLAND, Wash. - Four Pacific Northwest National Laboratory staff were contaminated with radioactive material this afternoon when a sealed radioactive source they were working with leaked.

The source is designed to be used in tests to verify the accuracy of radiation detection monitors.

Three of the four affected individuals received skin contamination; the fourth had contamination on clothing. 

Late this afternoon, PNNL conducted a radiological survey of the building occupants and spaces.

The initial survey indicated no additional personnel contamination.

Surveys of the affected staff members cars and offices found there is low levels of contamination.

PNNL and DOE will be reviewing the incident over the next few days.
