Governor Touts Downtown Revitalization on Visit to Yakima
Yakima, wa - Governor Gregoire toured through downtown Yakima on Monday evening to celebrate the start to the Downtown Futures Inititiative Phase II and to hear about plans for the Capitol Theatre.
She celebrated with local politicians Phase II's start with a ceremonial groundbreaking. The project will cost two and a half million dollars and improve sidewalks, streets and lighting from Front Street to 7th Avenue along Yakima Avenue.
Governor Gregoire says these improvement go hand in hand with plans for the Capitol Theatre.
"You know every community that is growing economically can only grow so far unless they invest in culture and the arts," says Governor Gregoire, "And the Capitol Theatre is an opportunity to say we've got everything. We've got beautification of the downtown, we've got a vibrant economic community and we've got culture and the arts."
The governor also made a stop over at the Yakima Convention Center for a ceremonial signing.
House bill 12-66 became law after the last legislative session.
It provides death benefits to public employees, including soldiers.
