Rarely Seen Historic Photos of Umatilla Chemical Depot Located on Government Web Site
Kennewick -- History buffs will be interested in a new set of photos on the Library of Congress web site. A Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot worker recently located the rarely seen set of photos. They offer an inside look at the construction of the Depot in the early 40s.
The black and white photographs depict everyday life in tiny trailers and overcrowded schools, and show workers erecting Depot storage igloos for munitions. The local post office went from handling a few hundred letters before the construction project began, to dealing with close to twelve thousand pieces of mail. and the pictures offered on the website tell the story.
