Woolpert's Role Increases to GM/Coach for Sun Kings
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakama Sun Kings have a new general manager...again. Paul Woolpert will add GM duties to his already busy role of coach. He has the new title because of technicalities within the Yakama Nation, which owns the Sun Kings.
Back on April 18, the team annoucned that tribal member Matt Tomaskin would be in charge. But since then, fellow tribal members have said correct tribal protocol wasn't followed in the hiring. As a result the Yakama Nation started the hiring process all over again. Tomaskin chose not to reapply. Monday, Woolpert returned from vacation and said he'd like the GM role.
"They didnt go through the right channels within the tribal rules," he said of the situation. "They had to redo it and have people try to ge the job. No one else really tried to get the job. I said to them I would be interested. I thought it would be a good idea. We need to get to work coming off back-to-back championships. We need some good things to happen in the community, and appearantly they thought it was a good idea."
Woolpert added that handling both coaching and general manager duties will be tough, but he has lots of help.
"I wouldn't take the job if I wasn't able to handle it. Rich Austin, and Barb, and other people are definitley up to the task. We definitely have the right people in place."
