Officer Involved Shooting Ruled Lawful

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WA -    The Yakima County Prosecutor says the shooting that killed a murder suspect nearly three weeks ago was lawful.

Yakima County Prosecutor Ron Zirkle says the shooting was justified under state law and the officer had "no choice other than deadly force".

Police say Sam Masters shot murder suspect Jose Alvarez in the head after Alvarez pointed a gun at officer Illeana Salinas.

Alvarez later died.

In his report to Yakima Police Chief Sam Granato, Zirkle noted that both Masters and Salinas had tried to use non-lethal methods in an effort to take Alvarez into custody.

Police say Alvarez led officers on a car chase before taking off on foot.

Police say Alvarez was the prime suspect in the murder of Juan Ramos nine days earlier.

Both officers had been placed on administrative leave following the incident.

Now that the prosecutor has ruled the shooting to be justified, they are expected to return to active duty shortly.
