EVANSVILLE, Ind. - It wasn't supposed to start like this for the new U-6. Miss Madison fans expected the boat to run fast and challenge to win its first heat. Instead, it was a 4th place finish in the Heat 1B at Evansville and another close call for driver Steve David.
It was one of the bizarre situations. A buoy from the 2.5 litre race course got loose. Mike Allen in the U-1 had to swerve to avoid colliding with it. J. Michael Kelley in the U-13 made an adjustment as well, right into the path of the U-6. Kelley and David bumped.
It made a hole in the U-13's right sponson, but nothing a quick patch job can't take care of. The U-6 had a scratch. I guess you can say it's been broken in.
"Interesting," was what Steve David called it.
Heat 1B was interesting indeed. At the end of the race, the checkered flag never came out as the first four boats crossed the finish line. Not seeing it, they ran another hot lap. The checkered flag did come out for Kelley as he crossed, finishing 5th but leaving some fans wondering whether he actually won the race. He didn't.
