350 Acres of Land Burned at Hover Park in Finley

FINLEY, Wash. - Benton County Emergency Services reported Monday night that 350 acres of land burned near Hover Park in Finley.

Smoke could be seen for miles as almost 60 firefighters from around the Tri-Cities battled the flames.

Firefighters said a helicopter was brought in to spray retardant over the burning area and reported that no structures were damaged.

The Benton County Fire District One Captain Devin Helland said the railroad was suspended after flames spread to either side of the tracks and that campers stationed at the park had to be evacuated.

Helland said, "This whole place was full of campers.  We had to evacuate and get them out of here.  We didn't know where it was going or how it was going.  We've had a lot of wind changes during this fire."

Fire investigators believe it was started by people in an area of the park that is used for a shooting range.

Benton County Emergency Service Officials said crews will be on scene checking for any flare-ups throughout the night.
