Stabbing Kills Pendleton Man, Leaves Neighbors Worried

PENDLETON, Ore. -- A murder in Pendleton leaves some neighbors scared and wondering if they are safe. It all happened early yesterday morning when most of them were sound asleep.

At around 1:45am, many of the residents on the 500 block of Southwest 15th street in Pendleton were awoken by knocks on their doors. Police officers were asking if they knew anything about the stabbing that happened right outside their front doors.

Neighbors didn't know exactly what happened. What Umatilla County District Attorney Dean Gushwa says allegedly happened is that Erin Fragua, Jo Ann Kuulani Saffery, and Martin Luther Dean Daniels tried to rob Alfonso Ibarra-Varella using a knife. They then stabbed him and he later died at Saint Anthony's Hospital.

Neighbors say that a blood stain is all that is left after Ibarra-Varella was stabbed to death and left to die on 15th street. Umatilla District Attorney Dean Gushwa says the three suspects were arraigned in Circuit Court Monday on charges of robbery and murder. They have 30 days to file their plea. Their preliminary hearing is set for July 16th at the Umatilla County Courthouse.
