Klickitat County Sheriff's Sergeant Dies In Crash South Of Toppenish
TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) - An off-duty Klickitat County sheriff's sergeant is dead following a headon crash south of Toppenish.
The driver and two passengers in the other car were hospitalized in Yakima, but 38-year-old Sergeant Peter Garland was pronounced dead at Toppenish Community Hospital after the crash yesterday afternoon.
State troopers say the other driver, 20-year-old Sean Kearney of Carnation, tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone on U.S. Highway 97.
Troopers say he and Garland tried to avoid each other by swinging onto the shoulder, but they collided headon about 20 miles south of Toppenish.
Sheriff Rick McComas says Garland was headed to Yakima to run errands. He adds that Garland had been promoted to sergeant earlier this year.
The crash remains under investigation.
