Naches Fire Department to respond to White Pass, again
YAKIMA, Wash -- Yakima County Commissioners voted today to reimburse the Naches Fire Department for medical calls to White Pass.
The Naches Fire District informed Yakima County they could no longer respond to medical calls at White Pass -- though they would continue responding to fires.
For years, the small fire district responded to both fire and medical emergencies near the vacation area, but Friday they told the county they would stop.
According to Dan Mansfield, the Naches Fire District was $10,000 in the hole last year because they responded to medical emergencies at White Pass. Mansfield says they have been asking the county for help for over a year, with no action -- so the only option left, was stopping service.
"We wanted to get their attention," said Mansfield.
Tuesday, County Commissioners approved a resolution to use 1% of EMS fund money to reimburse the Naches Fire District and other small districts when they respond to calls outside their district.
Both Yakima City and Selah Fire Departments expressed concerns over diverting EMS money to Naches, but said they would work with the county to resolve their problems.
Naches FD is expected to start service again Wednesday night.
