Extra Patrols On the River For Boat Race Weekend in the Tri-Cities
BENTON COUNTY, Wash. - Preparation for Water Follies continues all over the Tri-Cities.
Benton County Sheriffs will hit the water with extra force this weekend. There will be extra patrols and part of the river will be blocked off for the Hydro Races 2007.
The river will shut down to recreational boaters between the Blue Bridge and the Edison Street ramp. Members of the Coast Guard will make sure boaters do not pass the designated areas.
Deputies said they would be on the look out for drunk drivers on the water and said it will cost you a lot of money if you are caught drinking while operating a boat.
Benton County Corporal Chuck Jones said, "Watch the alcohol because we'll be watching the folks that drink to much and it's a pretty serious offense to get caught operating a boat while you're intoxicated."
Deputies said this year there has been twice as many accidents on the rivers compared to last year. Jones said most of the accidents are caused from inexperience boaters and poor decisions.
There will be about 10 law enforcement boats on the river this weekend for the boat races.
