KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Water Follies weekend is "officially" underway now that the Dash for Cash unlimited hydroplane race has been run.
U-9 Conover Insurance and driver Chris Bertram grabbed lane one and led for the first three laps, but U-66 Oh Boy! Oberto and Steve David powered past him to take the checkered flag. J. Michael Kelly in the U-13 Spirit of Detroit finished second and Bertram 3rd. David Williams and the U-48 Lakeridge Plumbing finished 4th.
The U-3 team, filling in for the U-21 which scratched at the last moment, went dead in the water right before the start of the race and did not finish.
"That's a workout," said Bertram. "Good experience for me," said the rookie driver. "Nice to give the fans a taste; we put on a good show out there," said Kelly.
The U-3 has run fast when it's run, but it's had equipment problems at each race site. "Wasn't meant to be," said driver Jimmy King. "Not sure what the problem is." King was confident the boat will be ready for Sunday.
