FINLEY, Wash. -- A fire burns on Jump Off Joe Butte, sending clouds of smoke into the sky. People could see it from miles away. Benton County firefighters believe that a man using a generator to fix a well started the fire. They say the blaze burned about 100 acres right off of Nine Canyon Road.
Firefighters say they were trying to keep the fire from jumping the road, where dry wheat fields would have allowed the fire to spread very fast. They say the weather was the biggest battle today.
Benton Conunty Captain James Jordon says, "The most difficult part of it was the heat. It was real hot, guys doing firing options at the bottom of the canyon were taking in a lot of heat."
Firefighters say that winds tonight also helped the fire spread but fortunately, now they have most of it contained. They say if the blaze had gotten over Nine Canyon Road, it could have burned a lot longer.
