Yakima, WA - HouseValues closes its Yakima Call Center today and lays off about 100 employees.
It used to be one of the fastest growing companies in the country.
Blame it on a slumping real estate market. Profits for HouseValues were down about 30% compared to last year at this time.
The doors are now locked up and the parking lot sits empty. Employees informed first thing this morning that they no longer had a job at HouseValues.
It's a little surprising considering all the fan fair surrounding the company when the news first broke that it was coming to Yakima a year and a half ago. The City of Yakima thought it could eventually provide two or three hundred new jobs.
HouseValues also received helped from the city, which gave the company $100,000 to train new employees. But now that money has to be returned. The contract stipulated that HouseValues had to remain in business for at least five years.
The employees who used to work there are receiving severance packages.
The city says while it hurts to lose one hundreds, there's still been a rise in non-ag jobs in Yakima.
