NACHES, Wash -- What started as an evening swim, quickly turned into tragedy when the foot of an 11- year old girl got stuck in rocks of the Naches River.
Becky Lynn Fife of Yakima was swimming with her uncle and cousins in the Naches River last night around 5:40pm.
An eye witness says she was floating away from the South Naches Bridge with her cousins, when her foot became trapped and the current pushed her under.
Family and friends tried to help but the water was just too fast.
"Her uncle made a couple of attempts, like four, but he couldn't reach her," said Jeremy McCoy, who witnessed the tragedy. "And her cousins who were floating down with her, tried to grab on to Becky, but they couldn't, because the current was too strong."
Fife was submerged for almost an hour before rescuers could recover her body. This is the first known drowning of the summer in the Yakima area.
