Mayor Wouldn't Have Voted for Yakima's Gang Ordinance

Yakima, WA -    When the Yakima City Council voted on the gang ordinance last month, Mayor Dave Edler wasn't in the country.

Now the mayor is saying that if he was in Yakima, he wouldn't have voted for it.

The mayor supported the revised ordinance prepared by the city's legal team.

Edler fears this one might not stand up if it were challenged legally, but he says he will still stand behind the council's decision.

"The majority rules," says Edler, "And because the majority made this decision, it is now the responsibility of all of us to position ourselves behind the will of the council."

Yakima's gang ordinance mirrors the ones in Sunnyside and Union Gap. Many people worry it will encourage racial profiling.
