Children Need to get their Immunization Shots before School Starts
As children gear up to go back to school, parents need to remember a few important check up's their children will need.
It's easy to remember your backpack and pencils when you head off on the first day of school, but the health department has a few other things you need to check off your list.
With the start of school just around the corner it is important that children have the proper vaccinations.
The shots that are needed are the ones that have been around for a long, long, long time Sharon Olson of the health department says, so it's not like it is something brand new and it is basically going to be a booster series to give them protection for the next few years.
The health department says vaccinations can be one of the most effective ways to protect children against serious and preventable illnesses.
Olson says close contact with other children is the big aspect, that if you have all the children immunized in the classroom then there's not going to be that concern in the classroom.
Another important check up children need is with an optometrist before they hit the books.
Dr. Elizabeth Heaston says, it is important for children to have their vision examined by an eye care professional because about 80 percent of what a child learns happens through their visual system which lots of people don't realize when they are going back to school.
The health department recommends that parents bring their children in sooner than later because their office will continue to get busier as the school year approaches, they also remind parents to bring their children's immunization records in with them.
