Kittitas wind project one step closer to being built

KITTITASl, Wash -- A controversial wind farm in Kittitas County is one step closer to generating energy.

Today the State Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC) recommended the Horizon Wind Project go to the governor.

But construction can't begin just yet, Governor Christine Gregoire still has to sign off on the project, which is strongly opposed by several local groups and the Kittitas County Commissioners, who have voted in the past to deny Horizon's building permit.

"To me this completely undermined the local legislative authority," said Alan Crankovich, a Kittitas County Commissioner. "EFSEC has again voted to go against our denial of the project."

There is at least one more proposed wind farm in Kittitas County, and its not clear if the County Commissioners will have a say on that one.

Gov. Gregoire is expected to make a decision on the Horizon Wind Projected soon.
