MoveOn.org says Iraq war is costing Central Washington too much
ELLENSBURG, Wash - Congressman Doc Hastings (R-WA) has supported the Iraq war from the beginning. But MoveOn.org is trying to change his mind before Congress votes on a new funding bill in September.
Thursday afternoon, members of the anti-war group unveiled a report, "The War at Home: What the Iraq War Has Cost Washington's 4th Congressional District." The report claims taxpayers in the 4th district have paid $936 million dollars so far toward the war. Over $4,000.00 per household. Money, MoveOn.org says, could have been better spent on healthcare or education.
"It could buy hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of elementary school teachers," said Steve Verhey, of MoveOn.org.
In 150 districts, all across the country, MoveOn.org is targeting members of Congress who support of the war. Their hope is to ratchet up pressure now, before members return to Washington, D.C. and vote on a new funding bill in September.
