OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a man jumped to his death from an Interstate Five overpass in Olympia. The death of Samuel Knapp has been classified as a suicide, the third at the Capitol Boulevard overpass in ten years. State Trooper Brandy Kessler says the 32-year-old Lacey man had been diagnosed as schizophrenic and in an apartment at his mothers property. He leaves a 13-year-old daughter. Kessler notes that a chain link fence along the sidewalk on the overpass is about five feet, nine inches high and is not especially hard to climb. The state Transportation Department does not consider it one that needs extra measures such as suicide prevention signs and telephones, which were installed last year on the Aurora Bridge in Seattle. Nine people jumped to their deaths from that span on State Route 99 in 2006 and four have done so this year. The average for the Aurora Bridge isx four suicides a year.
