Not sure how many attended the free event, but thousands lined the Celina shores of Grand Lake St. Marys.
With over a half dozen classes, vintage and the Formulaboats.com, there was almost always something on the water. Ted Porter's U-5 hull thrilled the crowd and attracted attention even when it was on the trailer.
On Sunday, Jimmy Shane (who also raced in several classes) piloted the unlimited hydro with laps reaching nearly 130 mph on the one mile course. Porter was on crutches due to ACL surgery to repair an injury suffered last spring. Also being repaired in the gap between Seattle and San Diego is the U-1.
Porter said repairs were well under way in Seattle and that the defending champion would be in San Diego with Mike Allen making his return after the blow-over at the Gold Cup. In addition to the exhibition in Ohio, the U-1 back-up hull was on display in Illinois the same weekend.
The Shane family was well represented on the course with Jimmy's sister Kelly making history by winning the event and getting her name on the Governor's Cup trophy. Adding to the family theme was Alexis Weber, daughter of Formula team manager Mike Weber.
Alexis returned to the drivers' seat after a blow-over earlier in the season. Former unlimited driver and Ohio native Ron Snider drove a couple of vintage boats on Sunday. He was also honored with a book dedication presented to him during the awards presentation.
The emotional dedication with words from his daughter Julie provided a nice ending to a great weekend of racing.
