OLYMPIA, Wash. - Fire season is coming to a close, but that doesn't mean the threat is over.
The Department of Natural Resources is warning people to be careful right now. The upcoming holiday weekend that's prompting the warning.
Labor Day weekend is, of course, the last big camping weekend of the year. And campers usually light campfires.
But campfires are not always legal right now, when the weather's still warm and brush is dried out. A DNR spokeswoman says forest health is a problem too. Wildfires are growing larger because many Washington forests have been weakened by disease and pests.
If you're planning a camping trip this weekend, you can find out what the fire danger is and what the fire rules are for that area before you go. Call 1-800-323-BURN, or log on to DNR's web site.
