Yankees beat Mariners 10-2 behind A-Rod

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez talked his way into the starting lineup tonight as a designated hitter, and despite a sprained ankle, he homered twice in an eight-run seventh inning to lead New York over Seattle, 10-2.

That gives the Yankees a three-game lead over the Mariners in the American League wild card race.

A-Rod, who used to play for the Mariners and picked up his nickname in Seattle, has 48 home runs to lead the majors. He's now tied with Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 17th place on the all-time list with 512 homers. It was the 51st time he's connected for multiple homers in a game.

The slumping Mariners have lost 11 of their last 12 games.

Tonight's loss went to Mariners starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn.
