Seattle City Council to enforce Sonics' lease at Key Arena

SEATTLE (AP) - The City Council today voted to hold the Seattle SuperSonics to the team's Key Arena lease through September 2010.
The action was largely symbolic since Mayor Greg Nickels has repeatedly said he will enforce the Sonics lease. Nickels has rejected suggestions by the team's principal owner, Clay Bennett, that an early buyout could be negotiated.
Council members say they hope the ordinance will encourage new talks to keep the NBA Sonics and WNBA Storm at Key Arena, despite the hostile relationship between the city and team owners during the past few years.
The council ordinance was patterned after an initiative filed by the fan group Save Our Sonics and Storm. The group has been pressuring city leaders to enforce the Key Arena lease.
