SAN DIEGO, Cali. - The six boat winner-take-all final, with a seventh boat as a trailer, was set up to be dramatic.  Jean Theoret in the U-37 Beacon Plumbing and Dave Villwock in the U-16 Elam Plus had traded heat wins.  Jeff Bernard in the U-5 had raced to two heat wins and his boat was running strong.

Seattle's winner, Steve David, didn't win a heat at San Diego, but was second in points going into the final.  Mike Allen in the U-1 won a heat, but lost points on Sunday when he was flagged for a N2 violation and had to settle for the trailer position after beating U-25 Superior Racing's Ken Muscatel in the provisional.

The Finals

Steve David led the pack across the finish line in the U-6 and kept the lead until the end of lap two when Jeff Bernard in the U-5 pulled ahead.  Deck-to-deck through three laps and David grabbed the lead again.  But Bernard was less than a full boat length back.

Dave Villwock got pushed out into lane four and trailed David, Bernard, and U-37's Jean Theoret.  Theoret and Dave Villwock were battling side-by-side for third and fourth when something went wrong with the Elam.  Villwock took the boat back to the pits.  He later said his compressor was stalling and he was worried about blowing the engine.

Jeff Bernard and Steve David actually bumped on lap four when both boats hit rollers. Both drivers said it was accidental.  David pushed Bernard wide in the turns and held on from there to win his second race in a row despite not winning a heat race all weekend.

Mike Allen finished 4th in the U-1, coming from the trailer position.

The U-13 has had some equipment problems all weekend, but J. Michael managed to keep it on the water to finish the race.  Kelly finished 5th.

The U-10 went dead in the water, most likely due to saltwater getting into the engine. It's happened before with that hull on the left side.  Owner Kim Gregory said they'll fix that before next year's race.

San Diego's Bill Muncey Cup Final Results

1.  U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto - Steve David
2.  U-5 - Jeff Bernard
3.  U-37 Beacon Plumbing - Jean Theoret
4.  U-1 - Mike Allen (started as trailer)
5.  U-13 Spirit of Detroit - J. Michael Kelly
DNF.  U-10 Ahern Rentals - David Bryant
DNF.   U-16 Elam Plus - Dave Villwock

"For all of our folks in Madison thanks for your faith in me all these years," said David after the win.

The boats got a little loose out there, said David.  Chalk that up to hard racing on the water and the back and forth between David and Bernard in the lead.   We haven't seen too many lead changes in finals recently and that made for a great show for the fans.

"Jeff Bernard is a new breed; he drove his heart out," said David.  "I'm running with the the greatest boat racers in the world."

"It just doesn't get any better than this," he said.
