Yakima, Wash. - Downtown Yakima is getting a complete makeover in an attempt to rejuvinate the area. City officials are making improvements to give downtown a brighter future, but in some cases that means looking to the past for help.
This morning a ceremony is being held to mark the laying of new brick streets in Yakima's historic North Front Street district. But it's certainly not the first time Yakima has seen brick streets.
In 1907, the downtown streets were a mix of rocks and dirt. Community leaders decided they needed to make improvements in order for Yakima to thrive economically. They decided the answer was brick roads. Within a year, all of the downtown streets were finished in brick. But over time, they were paved over with asphalt to provide a smoother ride for drivers.
Bringing the bricks back to the city is a two million dollar project, but most of that money was provided through state funding for transportation improvements.
