GRANDVIEW, Wash - A 2005 graduate of Grandview High School was killed in Iraq Tuesday.

20-year old Matt Emerson died while serving as a gunner near the Northern city of Mosul. He fell from a moving humvee, and broke his neck.

Emerson played football, golf and ran track while at Grandview. Teachers and friends describe him as dedicated, loyal and hard working.

Mike Closner, Grandview's Principal, taught Matt and said "he was a quiet leader."

According to Emerson's parents, serving in the military was a life long goal for their son.

"We had to let him follow his heart, because that's what he desired," said LJ Emerson. "He loved this country, and all of the freedoms that let him do the things he wanted."

Flags around Grandview are at half mast, and Emerson's #82 jersey is proudly displayed at the school.
