Mariners 8 - Oakland 7Posted: Updated:
OAKLAND, Calif. - Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Jeff Weaver end a four-start winless stretch, and the Seattle Mariners held off an Athletics' late rally for an 8-7 victory Tuesday in Oakland.
Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 11 games with the first of three doubles that Seattle hit to start the game off Chad
Gaudin. Suzuki also drove in two runs in the Mariners' seventh victory in eight tries this season in Oakland.
Ibanez's second grand slam of the season and 19th of the year highlighted a five-run fourth inning that put the Mariners ahead
8-1. Ibanez has hit 13 of his homers since August 7 and now has 100 RBIs for the third time in his career. He had 123 RBIs for the
Mariners last season and 103 for Kansas City in 2002.
Improving his record to 7-12, Weaver won for the first time since August 23. He allowed five hits and three runs, two earned,
struck out three and walked one in seven innings before giving way to Seattle bullpen in the eighth.
The A's scored two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to cut the Mariners' lead to 8-7.
Mariners left-hander George Sherrill struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the season and third of his career.
The Mariners wind up their three-game series in Oakland Wednesday afternoon at 12:35. They'll start 12-game winner Felix Hernandez against left-hander Dan Meyer.
