ANAHEIM, Wash. (AP) - Veteran left-hander Jarrod Washburn and the Seattle Mariners kept the Los Angeles Angels from clinching the American League West title with a 6-0 victory tonight at Anaheim.
Adrian Beltre had three hits and drove in two runs, Jose Vidro had a two-run single, and Jose Guillen hit a solo homer for the Mariners.
The Angels get two more chances to clinch the division title against the second-place Mariners, with the 4-game series continuing tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
The Angels' lead over Seattle is 8 1/2 games.
Seattle bench coach Mike Goff filled in for manager John McLaren, who was serving a 1-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball today.
Ending a personal 5-game losing streak, the 33-year-old Washburn improved his record to 10-15, shuttinhg out the Angels, his former team, for seven innings. He gave up five hits and walked one. Washburn had lost 9 of his previous 10 decisions.
The Mariners won for only the fifth time in 17 games this season.
In a game that starts tomorrow at 12:55 p.m., the Mariners will send 14-game winner Miguel Batista against 17-game winner Kelvim Escobar. Both are right-handers.
