YAKIMA, Wash. -- Parents receiving child support can expect new charges as of today. A twenty five dollar fee will be charged to parents who have received five hundred dollars or more in child support payments over the last year.
This could affect as many as 75,000 custodial parents through out the state. The fee is all part of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which requires every state to begin collecting the tax today. The twenty five dollar fee only applies if the parents have never received public assistance. An exemption could also be granted if parents believe the fee would severely hurt the family financially.
Letters will be sent out this week, informing people of the new fee and explaining how to file for an exemption
