Central Football Jumps Into Top 25 In Both Major PollsPosted: Updated:
ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Three consecutive victories, including a 45-40 home decision over nationally-ranked South Dakota this past Saturday, have vaulted Central Washington University into the top 25 in both of the major Division II national football rankings, released Tuesday.
The Wildcats (4-1, 3-1 North Central Conference) are ranked 18th in the D2football.com poll, marking the second straight week that they are in the top 25 of that ranking. Central had been 23rd in last week's poll, which is compiled by media members covering Division II football nationwide.
In the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II poll, CWU leaped from 26th place into a tie for 21st this week. Central had not been listed in the AFCA Top 25 since Sept. 9, 2003.
A total of four North Central Conference teams are ranked in the D2football.com poll and three are listed in the AFCA ranking. North Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha are both among the top six in both polls, with UND ranking second in both while UNO is fifth in the D2football.com poll and sixth in the AFCA poll. South Dakota dropped out of the top 25 in the coaches' poll but remains 24th this week in the D2football.com listing.
Central Washington, which has a 10-3 all-time record when ranked in the AFCA Division II Top 25, will travel to Western Oregon (4-1) for its final non-conference game of the season this Saturday (Oct. 13). The Wildcats, ranked fourth in the first official NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Poll released Monday by the NCAA, will then return to North Central Conference action on Oct. 20 against Western Washington at the fifth annual Wells Fargo Battle in Seattle, presented by Comcast, at Qwest Field in Seattle.
