Operation Harvest sets new record

YAKIMA, Wash -- Dale Carpenter was hoping donations would top 100,000 pounds of food and $30,000.00. By Saturday afternoon, it appears his goals would be met, and surpassed.

Operation Harvest began in 1982, and for 25 years, its helped fill the shelves at seven area food shelters, including the Union Gospel Mission and the Selah Food Bank.

Last year the event, which is spearheaded by the Yakima Downtown Rotary Club, with help from dozens of area businesses and community groups, collected 90,000 pounds of non-perishable food and collected $25,000. This year it blew those numbers away.

Final figures won't be in for a few more days, but organizers are excited about this year's totals.

If you forgot, or would like to donate you can contact Dale Carpenter at (509) 952-8255.
