YAKIMA, Wash -- The Yakima Chapter of the American Lung Association raised close to $50,000 to help find a cure for asthma. Several hundred walkers came out to raise awareness and cash for the many people in the area who struggle to breath.
About one in ten people nationwide suffers from asthma. But here in the Yakima Valley that number is much higher. According to the American Lung Association of Washington, every week two people in Central Washington die from asthma.
The surrounding mountains, wood burning stoves, forest fires and dust from farms mean the Yakima Valley is one of the hardest places for asthma victims to breath.
Money raised today will go towards finding a cure and other treatments.
