ATHENA, Oreg.- Western Farm Service is still trying to figure out what caused a huge ammonia leak in Athena, Oregon Monday morning.
Early indications show a filling hose fell off a tanker and a safety valve on the tanker failed, spilling about 1,400 gallons of ammonia.
The leak caused schools and neighbors to shelter in place and now Umatilla County Emergency Services want to make sure everyone knows what that means. Officials say to go inside, close all windows and doors, turn off your heating and air conditioning, and listen to the local radio or TV station for more information.
After emergency services give the o.k., it's then time to open all the windows and vents to remove any lingering ammonia vapors.
